Google is about to launch an insignificant-yet-convenient Gmail change on Android that will alter the design of notification icons for Chat and Spaces. This, in its turn, will aid users in distinguishing messages that arrive from the two platforms. Simply put, soon you’ll instantly see if you’ve received a notification from Chat or from Spaces — without opening either of the apps. This subtle alteration is set to prepare solid ground for the replacement of Google Hangouts with Google Chat. Keep reading for more information on the topic.

As Google Hangouts is about to be discontinued, the tech behemoth is, indeed, in the process of launching new status bar icons that help easily figure out the difference between messages from the aforementioned apps. Until recently, both apps used one and the same message-received icon. As a result, quickly determining where one’s messages came from was challenging. With the latest overhaul, things are sure to improve.

The Chat message-received icon will now resemble a single rectangular-shaped speech bubble, while that of the Spaces will be more conference-focused and display three avatars positioned close to each other. As a result, you will easily see the kind of message you’ve received — no need to launch the application itself and check!

The tech giant’s attempts to offer a worthy substitute in the light of Hangouts’ retirement have been quite successful so far. The possibility to tell the two aforementioned apps apart is another step towards that goal. Looks like this update is still in the process of being launched. Chances are Android users will start testing the results pretty soon. Bookmark this post for further updates on the topic and get back to us when you notice the difference.
